MS Fernao de Magalhaes

Overview

Named after the famous Portuguese navigator (better known as Magellan) who completed the first journey round the world, the MS Fernão de Magalhães sails on the Douro. Passengers can admire the unique landscapes, sculpted by nature and shaped by man, all along an enchanted valley where the famous port wine is produced.

Completely renovated in 2015, the MS Fernão de Magalhães is an intimate-sized standard ship, measuring 75 meters long and 11,40 meters wide. It can accommodate 138 passengers, in 71 cabins spread over three decks. The size of each cabin is between 11 m2 and 14 m2, offering amenities and providing guests with all the comforts they need during their stay. The majority of the cabins are located on the upper deck and have large panoramic windows. Those on the middle and main decks have large windows. The decoration is stylish and its atmosphere both elegant and friendly, and in perfect harmony with its surroundings. The pastel shades refer to the region’s “douceur de vivre” and the green hillsides. The restaurant is located on the main deck and offers a delicate cuisine in a refined setting, where large windows allow guests to fully enjoy the panorama. Situated on the middle deck is the lounge / bar with a dance floor. The sun deck has a pool with comfortable sun loungers and a large shaded area, the ideal place to relax.

Accommodation

Upon boarding, you will be welcomed by the crew who will help you settle into your cabin. The advantage of cruising is that you will only unpack your suitcase once before you let yourself go to relax and travel!

An elegant setting, a warm atmosphere and quality bedding: our cabins are comfortable, functional, air-conditioned and all have an exterior panoramic view allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery. Some cabins have French balconies or private terraces. Our fleet of Premium ships offer additional comfort providing more space in the cabins.

Gratuities are at the discretion of passengers.
Tipping practices vary widely between countries and cultures. At CroisiEurope, tips are distributed equally among all crew members. This gesture from our passengers reflects their appreciation for the quality of service and attention they have received throughout their cruise, at every level.

How much should I tip?
A tip of €5 to €10 per person per day is a common guideline, but each passenger is, of course, free to give any amount they feel appropriate.

For your convenience, an envelope will be placed in your cabin on your final evening aboard. You can leave it in the designated box at the reception desk when you disembark.

This information applies to river and sea cruises operated by vessels in the CroisiEurope fleet.

Entertainment

The sun deck of each ship offers an exceptional panoramic view of the landscapes throughout your cruise. Sun loungers are available, and you can enjoy a swimming pool or jacuzzi on some ships to relax.

The lounge / bar is open at all times, a convivial place where you can meet your friends, participate in entertainment, themed evenings and shows. On board our 3-deck ships, the piano bar is the ideal space to enjoy a cocktail, choose a book from the library, listen to or play the piano.

Perhaps one of the most popular of our destinations, Portugal is revealed to you over the Douro. Departing from Porto, you will sail from the Atlantic to the heart of the country , the Douro Valley. In fact, the Golden River draws sumptuous curves in the hilly landscape of the centre of the country, where terraced vineyards impose order and architecture to the decor. The quintas (artisanal vineyards) are, with the picturesque and isolated villages, the only few people living in this landscape as vast and sublime or wild.

Our cruises on the Douro are designed so that you do not miss any of the most beautiful sites of the country. After having seen Porto by day and by night, you will sail in the lands until you reach Salamanca, the golden city and "Small Rome", a city with immense history. On the way, our excursions will have taken you to Guimarães, one of the oldest towns in the country, or to Lamego and its sanctuary connected by no less than 700 steps. For wine lovers, it will also be possible to follow the Wine Route of Porto and enjoy some of the best local produce. You will also see Vila Real and the Manor of Mateus with the magnificent gardens.

Dining

The fine French gastronomy on board is an asset of our company. The meals are created by our head chef, Alain Bohn, member of the esteemed French association Maîtres Cuisiniers de France, which includes only 250 chefs from all over the world, and the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs since 2013. With his team of chefs, he creates each of the menus in the pure tradition of French gastronomy while bringing out the local tastes and flavours of the regions and countries crossed. Our wines are selected to accompany each of your meals. We adapt our menus for people with allergies or who are following a specific diet.

Located on the main deck, the restaurant is where all meals are served during your cruise. It seats all guests at tables which vary in size with a panoramic view. The atmosphere is casual but elegant.
